Goals
- SWBAT understand the formalistic approach.
- SWBAT identify passages of literature using the lens.
- SWBAT apply the lens to Their Eyes Were Watching God, and to understand how the message can change based on the different lenses.
- What is the formalistic lens?
- What is the structure of the work of literature?
- What is the theme?
- What symbols can be applied to the work?
- How can it be applied to different parts of literature?
- Ask students what they know about the formalistic lens, what it's comprised of, etc.
- Explain the rest of the approach, including symbolism, themes, idioms, and structure.
- Provide passages or phrases in which students can identify formalistic symbols.

Student Discussion
Students will assemble into groups, and each group will be given passages containing formalistic symbols. Using what they have found, students will interpret the message of each passage under the formalistic lens. After each group has finished, the students will rotate the passages to different groups.

Homework
- For homework, students will read ten pages of their book of choice. While reading, they will evaluate their book with a formalistic lens, taking note of all themes, symbols, metaphors, etc.
- Next day in class, students will briefly share their findings.
